Liverpool's Irish populaion

Liverpool's Irish connections go back centuries. The Irish families came to Liverpool on overcrowded boats due to the fact of the famine. The main  reason of the famine was a potato disease which destroyed the potato crops (Cosecha). During the famine, about 1 million people died because the mayority of the people depended on potatos as part of their diet.

In the 18th century people arriving from Ireland became harvest workers and dock labourers Irish women found work in cotton picking, tobacco works, nail factories, cheminal works and street trading.

A large number of Irish descent are Catholic. The 75% of  Liverpool's population have some Irish ancestory.
